The Versatility and Benefits of Lemon Oil: A Must-Have Essential Oil

Lemon Oil bottle from doterra

As a massage therapist, I’ve always been drawn to the therapeutic properties of essential oils… How they’re bioavailable to our human bodies and know exactly what to do, the many medicinal properties every one of them holds and how they can benefit my family, myself & my clients.

Among the many oils I use, Lemon Oil has become one of my absolute necessities, and I’m excited to share with you why I believe it should be a staple in your collection as well. Its versatility and refreshing aroma make it a true gem in the world of essential oils.

What makes Lemon Oil particularly special to me is its bright, uplifting scent and its incredible range of uses. Whether you’re new to essential oils or a seasoned user, Lemon Oil is one that you’ll find yourself reaching for time and time again.

What is Lemon Oil, and How is it Made?

The cold-pressing process extracts lemon oil from the peel of lemons. This method preserves the oil’s potent, citrusy aroma and powerful properties. Unlike lemon juice, which people primarily use in cooking, lemon oil offers concentrated benefits that extend beyond the kitchen. It can last up to 1-2 years when tightly sealed, stored in a cool environment, and kept away from direct sunlight, making it a long-lasting addition to your essential oil collection.

Why I Love Lemon Oil

One of the reasons I love Lemon Oil is its ability to refresh and purify. I often use it in my house to create a clean, invigorating environment. Whether diffused alone or with other oils to freshen the air or added to a natural cleaning solution, Lemon Oil helps create a space that feels both clean and uplifting.

Lemon Oil’s versatility extends far beyond its aromatic qualities. Due to its antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal medicinal properties, it’s a fantastic natural cleaner. It can cut through grease and disinfect surfaces, polish wood, shine glass surfaces like mirrors and windows, and help get rid of mold and mildew in showers and bathrooms, all while leaving behind a pleasant citrus scent.

I’ve found it particularly effective in my house, dealing with two teenage boys and their friends constantly coming and going. Maintaining a clean and welcoming environment is essential in such a busy household.

Staying on the cleaning topic and teenage years… Lemon oil is one of several essential oils that can kill harmful bacteria that can grow on your skin. Its natural astringent properties make it a great addition to skincare routines. This essential oil also has protective properties, such as antioxidants, that may brighten and preserve your skin tone. Since lemon essential oil is highly concentrated, you should dilute it before applying it to the skin. Ideally, aim for a maximum concentration of 1% to prevent irritation and sensitivities. This means no more than 5 drops per fluid ounce.

Here’s a quick DIY body wash that can help treat and prevent face and body acne from head to toe:

***Mix together 1/2 cup unscented liquid Castile soap, 1/4 cup glycerin, two tablespoons jojoba oil, 20 drops tea tree essential oil (aka melaleuca) and 15 drops lemon oil. Pour into an 8 oz squeeze bottle. To use: using a soft washcloth, massage a small amount of body wash over the body in circular motions.  Rinse well and then pat skin dry.***

Applications of Lemon Oil in Everyday Life

Lemon Oil isn’t just for cleaning, though. It has numerous applications in skin care, cooking, and even personal care. For instance, adding a drop or two of lemon oil to your water can provide a refreshing twist and a gentle detox due to its ability to break down petrochemicals. It also offers a boost to your immune system thanks to its high Vitamin C content. Lemon essential oil added to water should only be used in a glass or stainless steel cup/bottle.

For those who enjoy cooking, Lemon Oil can be a game-changer. Its concentrated flavor can enhance various dishes, from rice and marinades to desserts. Just a drop or two can add a vibrant, citrusy note that elevates your culinary creations.

Crayon colors on the wall? Gum stuck under the chair? Sticker residue? No problems! The lemon essential oil can assist and be used as a ‘magic eraser,’ using a few drops on a cotton ball to clean up.

Lemon Oil in Aromatherapy

In aromatherapy, lemon oil provides uplifting, antidepressant, and energizing effects while reducing physical and psychological stress.

Lemon Oil has natural purifying properties that can help cleanse the air and eliminate odors, and so diffusing it opens up the airways and promotes clear breathing. It can help reduce stress, and create a positive atmosphere. Whether you’re starting your day or winding down in the evening, the fresh scent of Lemon Oil can make a world of difference.

Personal Tips

Here are a few of my personal favorite ways to use Lemon Oil:

  1. Diffuse for a Fresh Home: Add a few drops to your diffuser to cleanse the air and fill your home with a bright, cleansing, citrusy aroma.
  2. Natural Cleaner: Mix Lemon Oil with water and vinegar for an effective, natural cleaning solution. A great way to get rid of sticky sap while hiking is with this oil!!
  3. Laundry Freshener: Add a few drops to a damp washcloth and toss it in the dryer for fresh-smelling laundry.
  4. Foot Soak: Combine 1/2 – 1 cup of Epsom Salt w a few drop of Lemon Oil into warm water for a rejuvenating foot soak that refreshes tired, dry feet.
  5. Soothing a sore throat and breathing easier:  1 drop of Lemon oil in a spoonful of honey can coat our throats and lower discomfort. A great concoction that might help with your seasonal symptoms will be a combo of these essential oils – Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint (1:1:1 ratio). Blend these 3, in equal parts, in a shot glass with water for acute allergy flare up and the relief will be felt shortly.  Note: Not all essential oils are created equally. Make sure the ones you use are backed up by a good source and company.

A Few Precautions

While Lemon Oil is generally safe for most people, it’s essential to use it cautiously. Avoid applying it to your skin before sun exposure, as it can increase your skin’s sensitivity to UV rays. Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil, especially if you have sensitive skin. If you’re pregnant or nursing, be sure to consult with a healthcare professional.

Contraindications to consuming this oil are if you have Ulcers or gastritis or if you have an extra-alkaline system, such as Alkalosis.

Lemon Oil Really is an Essential Oil!

Lemon Oil is truly a versatile and beneficial essential oil that belongs in every home. From cleaning to skincare to creating a positive atmosphere, its uses are nearly endless. If you haven’t yet added Lemon Oil to your collection, I highly recommend giving it a try.
