Drinking More Water

Important Facts & Tips to help with Drinking More Water

Our bodies are made up of approximately 60% water, so it’s no secret that we need to drink plenty of water- we need it for survival. But, exactly how much water should we be drinking everyday? What happens if we don’t drink enough water? What are some of the benefits that come from drinking enough water? And, what if you just don’t like to drink water, how can you drink more of it?

What are some of the benefits to drinking water?

Water is vital for almost every function of the human body.

  1. Drinking water helps regulate the temperature in our bodies. So, as the temperature outside increases, we need to increase our intake of water.
  2. It delivers oxygen to our bodies
  3. Water also helps maintain blood volume and proper circulation.
  4. It acts as a shock absorber for our joints and our brain.
  5. It flushes out toxins and waste from the body which can also help improve the health of our skin and hair.
  6. Our blood pressure can drop without adequate levels of water in the body
  7. It maintains our organ function!

How Much Water Should We Drink?

The rule used to be that everyone needed the same amount of water per day – 8 glasses. This equates to 64oz or 2 liters. But we are all different sizes, and have a different amount of water in our body at the start of each day, so this rule no longer applies. Instead, you can calculate how much water you need with this simple formula:

calculation drinking water

Simple, just take your body weight in lbs and divide by 2 to get the estimated number of ounces of water per day. So, if you weigh 150 lbs, you should aim to drink 75 oz of water each day. But, also listen to your body, if you’re feeling unwell, or you didn’t have much water the day before, or maybe it’s really hot outside, increase this number.

The total adult is made up of 60% water, but the percentages of water content for some of our most vital organs actually exceeds 60%:

 Lungs – 90%       Heart – 80%     Muscles – 75%      Skin – 72 %

Did you know? Our brain has 75% water content and is utilizing about 30% of our water intake!!

benefits of drinking water

What happens when we don’t drink enough water?

You lose approximately 2 quarts of water a day through breathing, perspiration, and urination. Drinking water after Deep Tissue massage or other treatment can help to replenish lost fluids and bring a much needed increase of water to our muscles to alleviate with soreness and dehydration that can occur. It’s also a good idea to drink water before a massage to make sure you’re adequately hydrated.

Regardless of your activities through the day, by the time you feel thirsty, your body has already lost over 1 percent of its total water amount.

Without adequate amounts of pure water in the body, the electrical system is impaired and the lymph system and organ function is not optimal.

Good performance, clarity of thinking and proper mind/body function all depends greatly on our water intake.

So when it’s hot outside, when you exercise vigorously or if you ignore your body’s desire for thirst and don’t replace that liquid, you can become dehydrated.

What happens when you become dehydrated?

Dehydration can make you feel tired and uncomfortable, and contribute to headaches. If you are exercising, in a hot environment, are ill or pregnant, you may want to drink additional water, even if you aren’t particularly thirsty. Remember, whenever you have stress or pain it is a good idea to reach for that extra cup of water.

What if you don’t like drinking water?

There’s really no substitute for water. Soft drinks, coffee, and tea, while made up almost entirely of water, also contain caffeine that can act as a mild diuretic, preventing water from traveling to necessary locations in the body. So, these fluids shouldn’t count toward your daily number of ounces.

But some people just don’t like the taste of water, why not enhance your water by adding just a couple of drops of essential oils? This will give you all the benefits of water PLUS some added benefits from the essential oils! It’s a win-win!
