What is Multiple Sclerosis?
MS is an autoimmune disease, meaning “the body attacks and damages its own tissues”. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, MS specifically damages the central nervous system, which can cause a variety of symptoms such as fatigue, vision problems, pain, and depression. Unfortunately, medical professionals don’t know the cause of MS. There is no cure, but patients can manage the symptoms.
Can Massage Really Help Multiple Sclerosis?
The short answer is, YES!!! The National MS Society points to the safety and effectiveness of using massage therapy to help relieve common symptoms of MS. These symptoms include spasticity, pain, poor circulation, and trigger points. Therefore, massage can help relax muscles, increase blood flow, and provide pain relief. I have previously discussed the important role that massage can play in reducing pain and managing stress. Because depression can make symptoms even worse, relaxation is especially beneficial. A recent article in US News and World Report confirms this assessment, saying that relaxation due to massage can lead to reduced stress in a patient. And here’s the quote from the report:
“I have had some patients report good results in terms of less pain, less spasticity and better mobility with massage,” says Dr. Robert Shin, a neurologist at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington.
Using Essential Oils to Alleviate Symptoms of joint or muscle discomfort
In fact, essential oils are a wonderful, natural, way to alleviate a variety of symptoms. For those with joint or muscle discomfort, I recommend using Frankincense and Copaiba. In fact, Frankincense has anti-inflammatory and relaxing properties, and Copaiba can help support the neurological system and reduce pain. Basil and Cypress may also relieve joint or muscle discomfort symptoms by improving circulation and muscle functions and Deep Blue is a soothing blend of eight essential oils that comfort and cool muscles..
