Diffuser vs. Humidifier

diffuser vs. humidifier

What is the difference & which is right for you?

You already know the importance of the environment around you in supporting your energy, health, and wellness, but deciding on the right tools to influence the health of your environment isn’t always easy. In fact, when it comes to understanding the difference between diffusers and humidifiers it can be confusing. First, don’t even think about using a humidifier as a diffuser 😉 Second, this article will give you an overview in comparing the two – Diffuser vs. Humidifier.

Diffusers and Humidifiers have different functions

Diffusers and humidifiers work in a similar fashion, but they have different roles in supporting a healthy environment in your home or office.

What does a humidifier do?

A humidifier is designed to increase the moisture in the air by boosting the overall water content and at a faster rate than a diffuser. Adding essential oils to the water tank of a humidifier isn’t recommended. The essential oils can degrade the plastic water tank and damage the motor over time, are difficult to clean from the machine, and because most humidifiers also use filters to prevent the machine from expelling mineral dust into the air, you’ll lose most of the medicinal benefits as the oil is filtered out. There are a variety of humidifiers available, such as ultrasonic humidifiers and more.

What does a diffuser do?

Diffusers have come a long way since the 1980s and handle oils differently than humidifiers. The early methods of diffusing included a votive candle to warm oils for dissemination. This method was inefficient, and the warming could actually harm the medicinal properties of the essential oils.

In today’s diffusers, an ultrasonic chip in the water tank vibrates when turned on and breaks down the oil into micro-particles. The added essential oils sit on top of the water, and they aerosolize without the use of a filter. The smaller particles are sent directly into the environment in a more concentrated form. You experience beneficial physical contact with your essential oils through skin absorption and through your respiratory tract when you diffuse them.

What are the best places to use your diffuser?

Place your diffuser a minimum of 2 feet off the ground and about 3 feet from where you are working or sleeping. Avoid placing your diffuser on wood surfaces, in direct sunlight, or near a fan. This article goes into detail on where to place a diffuser.

Benefits of Essential Oils

Through an area of the brain called the limbic system (learn more about it in my blog: Self-Care Through Aromatherapy and AromaTouch) the so-called emotional brain, you experience the environment and the sensory world around you. This can include anxiety, sorrow, fear, pleasure, memory, attention and focus. All are feelings and emotions experienced in the multiple structures that make up the limbic system.

The scent of the essential oil (or oils) can bring on emotional reactions based on past experiences. High-quality oils can go beyond memory and cognitive health in the limbic system. Of course, many have medicinal and healthful properties too. Some oils are purifying and germ-destroying. Others can fight against unwanted bacteria or pathogens. Some oils help to maintain clear airways and breathing, reduce congestion, support blood flow, soothe muscle soreness, and much more. Besides, many dōTERRA essential oil blends can help support multi-symptom relief. Learn more about the many benefits of essential oils on my blog

Safety & Cleaning

Diffusers and humidifiers each have a place in a healthy home environment. But, it is essential to clean both regularly to prevent mold or mildew growth. So, change the filter in your Humidifier per the manufacturer’s directions. Plus, soak removable parts of the machine in a 1 part vinegar and 2 parts tap water mixture for 30-45 minutes. Rinse and air dry weekly. Wash non-removable parts with the same solution. Clean your humidifier weekly.

Clean your Diffuser with the same vinegar and water solution or with a mild detergent and rinse thoroughly before drying with a soft cloth. After that, gently wipe the ultrasonic mist chip and nozzle with an alcohol pad between essential oil changes and with cleaning. Clean your diffuser monthly.

Examine both machines regularly and clean more frequently in warmer weather.
