Hot Stone Therapy is a specialty massage treatment that involves the application of stones to critical points on the body, giving a deep massage. Noteworthy are the kind of stones: smooth, water-heated basalt stones of varying shapes and sizes. Basalt stones are often used, and they come from black volcanic rock that is rich in iron, so they retain heat. River rocks are also normally used because they are so smooth – they have been smoothed over time by the river’s current. Both kinds of stones create sensations of comfort and warmth.
When to consider hot stone therapy
It is quite an experience to feel the deeply relaxing, penetrating heat from the stones. The warmth of the hot stones expands the blood vessels. This in turn, improves circulation by pushing blood and unwanted waste materials through the body and detoxifying it. It ensures that every cell in the body receives more oxygen and nutrients. At the same time, waste material is removed more effectively through the corresponding increase in lymph flow. The direct heat helps soothe the nervous system, relax muscles and body, and lull the mind to a gentle serenity.
Stone massage makes you feel deeply relaxed, allowing you to let go of all the stress within your body. It is really a fantastic experience to offer to the ones you love.
**As your therapist, I will always check stone temperatures before putting them on you to ensure they aren’t too hot. However, everyone has their own comfort range. Be sure to speak up if the stones are too warm or the pressure too intense.
Who should avoid hot stone therapy treatments?
If you have any of the following conditions, please consider treatments other than Hot Stone Therapy:
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease or any heart condition
- Diabetes
- Pregnancy
- Severe varicose veins or DVT
- Acute injury or inflammation
- Anyone on medications such as analgesics (pain-reducers), anti-asthmatics, anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxants or anti-coagulant
The benefits of a Hot Stone Massage:
- Hot stone massage might help to relax your muscles. Tense muscles can sometimes hinder the massage process. The heat from the stones helps relax the muscles, enabling deep tissue to be manipulated more effectively.
- Hot stone massage might expand your blood vessels and increases ‘energy flow,’ which can stimulate your immune system and aid in digestion.
- Hot stone massage might increase the flexibility in the joints, aiding in easier mobility and movement.
- Hot stone massage might be pain relief, especially for pain associated with carpel tunnel syndrome, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other chronic conditions. It also helps decrease muscle spasms and relieves pain and tension created by strained and contracted muscles.
- Hot stone massages might reduce your stress. Studies show that stress is the #1 root of many diseases and disorders. Massages are known to reduce stress and tension, which in turn helps with insomnia.
