Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition of the hand, wrist, and arm caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist. The carpal tunnel is a tunnel, or passageway, inside the wrist. The passageway protects the median nerve to the hand and the tendons that bend the fingers. When the median nerve is pinched or compressed, it creates numbness and tingling in the fingers. Progressing into weakness in the hand and wrist, and eventually sore hands and arms.
What causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
There are many causes and risk factors for this syndrome:
- Wrist fracture
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Nerve damage caused by diabetes
- Prolonged use of a keyboard
- Non-ergonomic workstation
- Ongoing rock climbing
- Repetitive movement of writing/ painting / playing on a musical instrument
How to manage the pain?
In mild cases, carpal tunnel syndrome can be treated with rest breaks when doing repetitive tasks, the use of splints, much-needed stretches to the muscles of the forearms, releasing trigger points, cryo care in the form of ice-massage, cold water rinsing, pain-relieving essential oils and cremes, and therapeutic massage. More severe cases may require medications, corticosteroid injections, or surgery.
Please consult your doctor if you believe you may have this issue and get clearance for a massage.
Massage for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Relief
Therapeutic Deep Tissue Massage can be very useful in relieving the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome and preventing a mild case from becoming a serious one. This treatment is one of the least expensive and least invasive methods of treating this syndrome.
Massage can help relaxation and reduce chronic pain. It relieves inflammation tired and aching muscles and improves muscle tone and range of motion. Massage stimulates the release of endorphins and increases tissue metabolism. By relieving the physical pain, the sufferer reduces their stress, which improves mood and concentration.

Some Tips for Self-Care Stretching
- Stretch frequently, flexing tight joints and shaking out tense limbs.
- Stretch to a place where you feel pull but not pain. Don’t bounce.
- Hold the stretch for 3-5 breaths to increase circulation and 5-10 breaths to lengthen a muscle.
- Breathe easily while holding the stretch. Slow, full breaths can get more oxygen to your muscles and help prevent straining.
- Return to your comfort zone if you feel a sharp pain when stretching.
- If you have a recent injury or surgery, consult your primary health practitioner before continuing a stretching routine.
There are many benefits of stretching that I have outlined in my blog, The Amazing Benefits of Stretching. If those stretches feel good, then imagine what a massage can do!
