Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing, a type of alternative medicine. Rei is the Japanese word for Universal and Ki is the word for life force energy. Ki is also known as Qi or Chi in Asia, Mana in Hawaii and Prana in the Hindu literature tradition from India, healing practitioners sometimes refer to it as “subtle” energy.
Though it may be subtle, it has a great impact. Consider the atom — tiny, but when its energy is released, it’s extremely powerful.
There are different kinds of Ki, and we absorb it from different sources — food, sun, water and air.
We also give it to and receive it from other people, which is where energy healing techniques that work with the flow of energy come into play. To maintain health and well-being, there should be a balance of Ki circulating through and around our bodies without interference. Reiki aims to free up unbalanced energy flow in our body and promotes a positive mental state.
Reiki – Gentle Therapy Reduces Stress & Pain
As one of the best known types of energy work, Reiki is based on the idea that the practitioner channel energy through their palms to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing by stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities. Massage therapists, nurses and other Reiki practitioners have seen it reduce people’s stress, anxiety and pain again and again. The particular beauty of Reiki is that it can be used on anyone no matter their condition, no contraindications what so ever. From infants and kids to those healing from surgery or wounds to people in hospice care and those next to their computers!
Where did Reiki come from?
The origin of Reiki can be traced back to the early 20th century, specifically a Japanese-Buddhist monk named Mikao Usui. An accomplished practitioner of the martial and meditative arts, he gave healings with light touch. He also taught some of those who received these treatments. These students called what he did “Usui Hand Healing.” One of them developed the system further and began calling it Reiki (from Rei, meaning universal, and Ki, meaning life force energy).
The 5 Reiki Principles
Reiki offers a set of principles or precepts, as they’re commonly called. They can be looked at as keys to living a happy life and serve as “medicine to the soul’. These principles are comparable to affirmations or intentions, and they’re very much about being focused on the here and now.
1. Just for today, do not worry.
2. Just for today, do not anger.
3. Just for today, be humble.
4. Just for today, be honest.
5. Just for today, be compassionate toward yourself and others.
What to expect during a session?
During a Reiki session, the practitioner will place their hands in different positions on the head and body of a fully clothed client and hold the positions with no pressure. Practitioners may also place the hands on a site of injury or pain. The practitioner’s hands don’t have to actually touch the body, and the receiver does not need to be fully awake.
Reiki energy seems to soothe, or balance, the nervous system. It can be adapted for almost any use, and can even support conventional medical procedures. Hospital and other medical staff notice that Reiki calms and reassures patients in pain and distress. Besides, they enjoy giving it because it reduces their own stress as well.
Since it can help people relax no matter what their situation, I highly encourage you to learn Reiki to practice on yourself and family members.
In fact, it is easy and inexpensive for almost anyone to learn Reiki for treating oneself, friends and family.
Before a Reiki session, wear comfortable clothing, avoid having a heavy meal and use the restroom if you need so that you can enjoy the full session without being interrupted.
