Quick answer: Shoulder impingement syndrome is when the tendons and bursa in your shoulder get pinched under the bony arch of your shoulder blade. Tight chest muscles, bad posture, and too much overhead movement are usually to blame. The right self-care—self-massage, a few targeted stretches, and dead hangs—can take the pain way down and get your range of motion back. And when you’re ready for professional help, massage therapy gets into the deeper muscles you just can’t reach on your own.

You know that annoying ache when you reach up for something on the top shelf? Or that weakness you feel just brushing your hair? Maybe you’re waking up at night because your shoulder won’t let you get comfortable. If any of that sounds familiar, you’re in good company. That’s shoulder impingement syndrome—and it’s one of the things I see most in my practice. It doesn’t care who you are, either. I’ve worked on competitive swimmers, weekend baseball players, and people who just sit at a desk all day.

Here’s what I want you to know: you have more control over this than you think. You don’t have to just pop ibuprofen and wait it out. As a massage therapist, I’ve seen how much of a difference the right hands-on approach can make—and a big part of that is stuff you can do yourself, at home, every day. This guide walks you through exactly what’s going on in your shoulder and gives you the tools to actually do something about it.

What’s Actually Happening Inside Your Shoulder?

Your shoulder is an incredible, complex mobile joint. It’s a beautifully designed ball-and-socket! The key players are your rotator cuff muscles and tendons, which act like guy wires, keeping the head of your arm bone perfectly centered. I am talking more about Rotator Cuff Syndrome in my blog.

The issue we call “impingement” happens in a narrow little corridor up top, beneath the bony arch of your shoulder blade (the acromion). When things get tight, inflamed, or out of balance, the space shrinks, and the soft tissues—those sensitive rotator cuff tendons and the cushioning bursa—get pinched, or impinged, every time you move your arm, especially when you lift it overhead. You might have heard it called rotator cuff tendinitis, subacromial impingement, or even swimmer’s shoulder — they’re all describing the same problem.

For a deeper look at what’s happening inside the joint, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has a solid breakdown.

Common Culprits We Need to Address:

Riding the Desk: Poor posture, especially a slouched, rounded shoulder position, constantly pulls the shoulder out of its happy alignment. That includes leaning on your forearm, which in turn pushes the arm bone high into the socket and out of position.

Overuse: Repetitive motions like painting murals, freestyle stroke swimming, pitching/serving balls or cleaning done without proper muscle balance.

Muscle Imbalance: Often, the chest (pecs) are too tight, and the upper back/rotator cuff muscles are too weak. This pulls the whole shoulder girdle forward.

Scapular Snoozing: If the muscles that stabilize your shoulder blade (the scapula) aren’t firing correctly, the ball-and-socket joint can’t move smoothly.

Recognizing the Symptoms of Shoulder Impingement Syndrome (The Painful Arc)

Impingement usually follows a predictable script:

Painful Arc: That sharp or aching pain when you lift your arm, typically only when it’s between shoulder height and fully overhead (roughly 60° to 120°). Once you get past that point, the pain often lessens.

Nighttime Waking: Lying on the affected side compresses the already irritated tendons, guaranteeing a rude awakening.

Loss of Strength: You might notice difficulty lifting and holding objects, especially away from the body.

“Knots” and Soreness: Pressing on the front or top of the shoulder often reveals tender, ropy spots and myofascial trigger points.

Overall Stiffness: The shoulder just feels tight and restricted, particularly first thing in the morning.

Self-Massage Techniques: Hands-On Relief You Can Do Daily for Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

As a therapist, my goal is always to release the muscle tension that is pulling your shoulder into a painful position. While nothing beats a professional session, self care by self-massage is your best friend for daily maintenance. It reduces tension, brings fresh blood flow to the area, and helps release stubborn trigger points that contribute to the pain.

A Crucial Note: Always work slowly and gently. You should feel a satisfying, releasing pressure—never sharp, shooting, or intense pain. Aim for 30–60 seconds on each area.

Technique 1: Melting the Tight Pecs (The Front-Door Key)

Why it matters: Tight chest muscles (pec major and minor) are the prime offenders, constantly dragging your shoulder forward and narrowing that painful subacromial space. Releasing them is often the most impactful thing you can do.

How to do it:

Use the fingertips of your opposite hand. Find the area just below your collarbone where the chest muscle meets the front of the shoulder.

Apply moderate pressure and move your fingers in slow, deliberate circles, working toward your armpit.

When you find that tender, “just-right” spot, hold steady pressure for 20 to 30 seconds, breathing deeply and letting the muscle soften beneath your touch.

Work across the width of the chest, moving in small horizontal rows from your collarbone down toward the middle of your chest.

Pro Tip: For deeper pressure, place a lacrosse ball against the wall, lean into it with your chest near the shoulder, and gently roll side-to-side.

Technique 2: Releasing the Upper Trap & Levator

Why it matters: These are the “stress muscles.” Chronic tension here elevates the shoulder blade and throws off the delicate mechanics of the entire shoulder complex.

How to do it:

Reach your opposite hand across and firmly grasp the fleshy muscle running from your neck to the top of your shoulder (the upper trap).

Squeeze, hold, and use your fingertips to slowly knead along the top of the shoulder.

Find any knots and apply sustained pressure.

For the levator scapulae, press your fingertips into the area just behind the top inner corner of the shoulder blade. It’s usually surprisingly sore! Hold and breathe.

Technique 3: Targeting the Posterior Rotator Cuff

Why it matters: In impingement, the muscles on the back of the shoulder (like the infraspinatus) are often chronically strained from trying to stabilize a poorly positioned joint. Releasing this area can reduce joint compression.

How to do it:

Cross your affected arm across your chest and use your opposite hand to reach around.

Press your fingertips into the back of the shoulder, just below the prominent spine of the shoulder blade.

Use small, firm circular strokes, working from the middle of your shoulder blade outward toward the armpit. Go slow! This area can be intense, so breathe through it.

Alternative: Lie on the floor with a lacrosse ball placed under the back of your shoulder and let gravity apply the pressure, shifting your body gently to explore the tender spots.

Essential Stretches for Restoring Mobility

Self-massage gets the tight tissues to relax; stretching teaches them to lengthen and stay that way. These stretches target the key muscles that need to be flexible for your shoulder to heal.

Remember: Never push into sharp pain. A deep, sustained pull is the goal. Hold each stretch for 30–45 seconds.

At-Home Stretches for Shoulder Impingement

Cross-Body Shoulder Stretch: Targets the posterior shoulder capsule and rotator cuff. Lengthens the tight tissues at the back of the joint.

Doorway Chest Stretch: Targets the pectoralis major/minor and anterior deltoid. Reverses the forward-rounded posture caused by desk work.

Sleeper Stretch: Targets the posterior capsule and infraspinatus. A powerful, research-backed stretch for reducing symptoms.

Thread the Needle: Targets thoracic spine rotation. Releases stiffness in the mid-back; when the mid-back is stiff, the shoulder must compensate.

Wall Angels: Targets scapular mobility and the chest. Simultaneously stretches the chest and retrains the deep, essential stabilizing muscles.

The Dead Hang: A Game Changer for Decompression

If there is one technique I urge all my clients with impingement to try, it’s the simple dead hang. This deceptively easy act of hanging from a bar allows gravity to work as a natural traction device, creating space inside the joint.

Why It’s So Effective

When you hang, gravity gently pulls the head of the arm bone down, pulling it away from the bony acromion above. This directly increases the subacromial space—the very area that is being pinched! It’s like gently prying apart two tight surfaces.

It also has the added benefit of strengthening your grip and engaging the serratus anterior and lower trapezius, which are key stabilizing muscles that are often dormant in impingement cases.

How to Hang Safely and Smartly

Get a Grip: Find a sturdy pull-up bar (or monkey bars). Use an overhand grip, hands slightly wider than shoulder-width.

Ease In: Step off the ground gradually. Do not drop suddenly.

Relax and Sink: This is the opposite of a pull-up! Let your shoulders drift up toward your ears in a passive shrug. You want the shoulders to fully relax and let gravity pull them down.

Breathe: Hold for comfort. Start with 10 to 20 seconds and build up over time. You should feel a stretch or gentle pull, not sharp pain.

Dismount: Step down carefully, don’t jump.

Dead Hang Progressions

A Word of Caution: Skip the dead hang if you have an acute rotator cuff tear, an unstable joint, or if it causes sharp/shooting pain. Always warm up with some gentle movement beforehand.

Beginner: Partial weight support. Use a stool to keep your feet partially on the ground, controlling how much weight loads the shoulder. Hold for 10 to 20 seconds.

Intermediate: Full decompression. Perform a complete dead hang with both feet off the ground. Hold for 20 to 45 seconds, 2 to 3 sets.

Advanced: Dynamic mobilization. Once comfortable, introduce gentle side-to-side swaying to add a dynamic component. Hold for 45 to 60 seconds.

Building a Simple, Effective Daily Routine

Consistency is your healing superpower here. A little bit every day beats an intense session once a week.

Daily Routine

Morning: Wall Angels, Doorway Stretch, and a short Dead Hang. Focus on mobilizing the joint and correcting posture. 5 to 7 minutes.

Midday: Pectoral Self-Massage using a lacrosse ball. Focus on counteracting the effects of desk posture and prolonged sitting. 2 to 3 minutes.

Evening: Full Self-Massage Sequence, Sleeper Stretch, Thread the Needle, and a final Dead Hang. Focus on deep tissue release and full lengthening. 8 to 10 minutes.

When It’s Time to Book a Session

Self-care is incredible, but it’s not a cure-all. Please see your doctor or book an appointment with me if:

Your pain is severe, constant, or worsening.

You feel sudden weakness, numbness, or tingling down your arm (this needs medical assessment).

You suspect a serious injury, like a full tear (a “pop” and significant weakness is a red flag).

Your symptoms have lingered for over a month with no real improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

Can massage therapy help with shoulder impingement?
Yes, absolutely. Massage therapy is one of the most effective hands-on approaches for shoulder impingement. It works by releasing the tight chest, neck, and rotator cuff muscles that are pulling the joint out of alignment and narrowing that pinch-prone space. A therapist can also reach muscles like the pec minor and subscapularis that you simply can’t get to on your own. Regular massage, paired with stretching and posture work, can make a real difference in both pain levels and how freely your shoulder moves.

How long does it take for shoulder impingement to heal?
It depends on how long it’s been going on and how consistently you’re doing your self-care. Mild cases can start feeling noticeably better within a few weeks of daily stretching, self-massage, and correcting posture habits. More chronic cases can take two to three months of consistent work. The biggest factor? Not skipping your routine. A little bit every day beats an intense session once a week.

Should I get a massage if my shoulder is currently inflamed or swollen?
If your shoulder is in an acute flare—hot, visibly swollen, or extremely painful to touch—it’s best to let the inflammation calm down a bit first. In that phase, ice and rest are your friends. Once the acute stage passes (usually within a few days), massage becomes very beneficial for improving circulation, releasing surrounding muscle tension, and speeding up recovery. When in doubt, check in with your doctor and let your massage therapist know what’s going on before the session.

What’s the difference between shoulder impingement and a rotator cuff tear?
Shoulder impingement is when the tendons and bursa get pinched and irritated in the subacromial space—the tendons are still intact, just compressed and inflamed. A rotator cuff tear means one or more of those tendons has actually torn, either partially or completely. A full tear often comes with a sudden “pop,” significant weakness, and the inability to lift the arm. Impingement pain, on the other hand, tends to be a more gradual, aching discomfort with a specific painful arc of motion. Both can coexist, which is why getting a proper diagnosis matters.

Is it okay to work out with shoulder impingement syndrome?
Yes, with some adjustments. The goal is to keep moving—complete rest actually tends to make things worse. Avoid overhead pressing, heavy lifting with the arm out to the side, and any movement that lands right in that painful arc (roughly 60°–120° of elevation). Swimming, rowing with proper form, and lower-body work are generally fine. Focus on strengthening the lower traps, serratus anterior, and rotator cuff stabilizers. And always stop if something causes sharp pain.

Does heat or ice work better for shoulder impingement syndrome?
Both have their place. Ice is best right after activity or when the shoulder feels hot, inflamed, or freshly irritated—it helps calm acute inflammation. Heat works better for chronic, stiff, achy impingement—it loosens up the tight muscles before stretching or self-massage. A good rule of thumb: if it just flared up, reach for ice. If it’s that slow, nagging stiffness you’ve been dealing with for weeks, heat before your routine can really help.

How often should I book a massage for shoulder impingement syndrome?
In the beginning, weekly sessions tend to give the fastest results because the therapist can systematically work through the layers of muscle tension before they tighten back up. Once you start feeling better, you can space it out to every two to three weeks for maintenance. Every body is different, so we’ll figure out what rhythm works best for you.

Can shoulder impingement syndrome go away on its own?
Sometimes, especially if the cause was a temporary spike in activity that you’ve since dialed back. But left untreated, it tends to get worse rather than better—the muscles compensate, posture suffers, and what started as mild pinching can turn into chronic tendon damage. The good news is that with consistent self-care and hands-on treatment, most people see real improvement without needing surgery or long-term medication. It’s very much a condition that responds well to the right kind of attention.

Can poor posture really cause shoulder impingement?
One hundred percent. When you slouch or round your shoulders forward—as most of us do at a desk or on our phones—the shoulder blade tips forward, which physically shrinks the subacromial space underneath. Over time, that compression irritates the tendons every single time you move your arm. Correcting posture and opening up the chest through stretching and self-massage isn’t just helpful for impingement—it’s essential.

Rotator cuff syndrome, or shoulder impingement syndrome, is common in people who paint, swim, lift weights, play tennis, or perform any overhead activity. Living in Boulder offers plenty of outdoor activities, but sports participation can also bring rotator cuff and shoulder injuries.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the rotator “cuff” is a group of four muscles* and tendons connecting the upper arm (humerus) to the shoulder blade (scapula). These muscles allow the shoulder to move and rotate inward (internal rotation) and outward (external rotation). The tendons provide stability to the shoulder.

*The muscles in the rotator cuff include:

Teres minor

Infraspinatus

Supraspinatus

Subscapularis

Rotator cuff tendinitis refers to irritation of one of these tendons and inflammation of the bursa lining these tendons. A tear or inflammation can occur on a microscopic level (or worse) from overuse or injury.

When the tendon is stretched or inflamed, pain can be persistent and affect everyday activities. Any motion overhead or reaching back may trigger discomfort.

Massage for Rotator Cuff Syndrome

Treatment depends on the severity of the injury. While there are many exercises to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles, coupling exercise with regular massage is beneficial. Massage improves blood flow to the area, aids healing, breaks down scar tissue, and eases muscle tension.

Deep Tissue massage addresses pain and muscle spasms while improving range of motion. Trigger point compression can reduce muscle tightness, and pain-free passive joint movements maintain mobility.

After 48 hours, heat may help the injured site. More direct therapy, like friction to muscles and tendons, reduces adhesions and micro scar tissue. Post-surgery scar tissue breaking typically starts 4–6 weeks after the operation.

Between massage treatments (2–3 times a week for 3 weeks), apply self-treatments such as hydrotherapy stretches and resistance exercises to stay on track for recovery.

If you have shoulder pain or a diagnosed rotator cuff injury, contact us or book your deep tissue treatment today. Consider adding a 30-minute Hand & Arm Add-On to your session as a first step toward wellness.

Each June is Migraine and Headache Awareness Month. Headaches and migraines can cause pain and immensely affect your overall quality of life. While almost 90% of the population has experienced a headache, for many people, it may be a minor and infrequent annoyance. For many others, however, headaches can have a severe impact on their life. This is true not only on a personal level but also on a professional level. One in ten headache sufferers will miss an average of four days of work each year. Collectively, this is a significant economic and personal cost. Many people turn to medication for relief; however, massage therapy and bodywork are a great alternative.

Seeing clients who present with headaches is a very common experience at Heavenly Embrace Wellness, and that’s why we offer a few services that might assist with those conditions. In particular: reflexology, deep tissue massage therapy, and energy healing.

What Kind of Headache are you Experiencing?

While there are many different types of headaches, the International Headache Society classifies three primary types. They stem from environmental, chemical, hormonal, and physical factors.

Migraine Headache:

A migraine headache feels like intense throbbing or pulsing and is often associated with what’s called an “aura.” Migraines can range from moderate to severe and can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and sensitivity to light or sound. They have vascular origins and can last anywhere from a few hours to several days. Migraines are often triggered by stress, muscle tension, and poor sleep.

Vestibular Migraine Headache (VM):

Symptoms include vertigo, balance issues, dizziness, feeling light-headed, spinning, swaying, and loss of balance with sensitivity to motion. May or may not involve headaches. Vertigo symptoms may come and go within minutes or last for days.

Tension Headache (Tension-Type Headache or TTH):

A tension headache is the most common type worldwide. Causes include:

Postural

Structural

Myofascial

Muscular

TMJD (TemporoMandibular Joint Disorders)

Neurologic

Tension headaches have a muscular origin and are often described as feeling like your head is being squeezed. They are typically bilateral and are not worsened by physical activity.

There are two kinds of TTH:

ETTH – Episodic Tension-Type Headache
After at least ten previous headaches, ETTH refers to having fewer than 15 headaches per month. They can last from 30 minutes to a week.

CTTH – Chronic Tension-Type Headache
CTTH refers to having more than 15 headaches per month. They can last for hours and be ongoing. This affects about 3% of the population.

Cluster Headache:

A cluster headache is one of the most painful headache types because the pain is sharp and intense, often concentrated around one eye or side of the head. These have a vascular origin and come on suddenly, lasting 15 minutes to a few hours. Cluster periods can last from six to twelve weeks, sometimes up to a year.

Cervicogenic Headache (CGH):

This is a secondary headache resulting from another source such as inflammation or head/neck injuries. They originate from issues in the cervical spine, often daily, and are typically unilateral. Movements of the neck provoke discomfort, which can last for several hours.

Common tender areas include the occipital (base of skull), temporal (above ears), and supraorbital (above eyes) regions.

Neck Stretches for Self-Care:

I highly recommend regular neck stretches to help prevent neck and shoulder pain—and headaches too! Read more in my blog Got Text Neck.

Some Tips for Stretching

Stretch frequently, flexing tight joints and shaking out tense limbs.

Be gentle. Stretch to a place where you feel pull but not pain. Don’t bounce.

Hold the stretch for 10 seconds to increase circulation, 30–60 seconds to lengthen a muscle.

Breathe easily while holding the stretch. Slow, full breaths help get more oxygen to your muscles and prevent strain.

If you have a recent injury or feel sharp pain when stretching, consult your healthcare provider first.

Massage for Headaches:

Massage is a great way to relieve tension in the back, neck, and shoulders—areas that often cause headaches, especially tension types. Sessions may include Myofascial Release and Trigger Point work in key muscles and regions.

If your headaches involve ear pain, jaw tightening, or teeth clenching, consult your doctor about TMJD. We offer massages for TMJ issues to help relieve pain in the jaw, neck, and head.

Reflexology and Energy Healing, such as Dynamic Body Balancing (DBB), are also safe and effective ways to prevent, manage, and treat headaches and migraines.

Far Infrared Sauna Therapy Reduces Chronic Pain

Pain is an important signal designed to alert us to problems in our body. Chronic pain is almost always associated with chronic inflammation.

Far infrared therapy helps reduce inflammation and improves conditions like chronic back and neck pain, phantom limb pain, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, menstrual pain, osteoarthritis, and chronic tension headaches.

Tea Tree Oil, also known as Melaleuca essential oil, boasts over 92 different compounds and a myriad of uses. With a history that spans from the indigenous Aborigines of Australia to World War II soldiers’ first aid kits, people have long celebrated Tea Tree Oil for its healing properties. But what makes this oil so special, and does science back its reputation?

A History of Healing

People have used Tea Tree Oil for centuries as a natural remedy. Indigenous Australians were among the first to harness its potential, using crushed leaves to treat wounds and infections. During World War II, soldiers carried Tea Tree Oil in their first aid kits, relying on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties to treat wounds in the field. Although its historical significance is undeniable, modern research tells a more nuanced story.

The Science Behind the Hype

Despite its legendary status, scientific research on Tea Tree Oil is surprisingly limited. Nevertheless, some studies do confirm that it’s effective in treating certain conditions, such as nail fungus and acne. Moreover, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic abilities have been deemed promising, particularly in treating wound infections.

“Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.” ~ Khalil Gibran

As a massage therapist, I’m always exploring ways to enhance my clients’ well-being. One powerful method I recommend to all is grounding, also known as earthing. This method involves activities that “ground you” or electrically reconnect you to the earth. The cumulative effect of this simple practice on our system is priceless.

The Importance of Reconnecting to the Earth

Earthing and grounding are essentially the same, referring to connecting to the Earth’s natural energy through direct physical contact with the ground. Grounding is rooted in the science and physics of how the Earth’s electrical charges can positively affect your body.

Grounding is based on the idea that the Earth has a mild negative charge. By connecting with the Earth, the body can balance its electrical charge. This occurs as it absorbs negative electrons that attach to free radicals and neutralize their effects. This process may help reduce chronic inflammation and improve overall health. Grounding connects people to the Earth’s healing energy, syncing the body to natural rhythms and restoring overall health.

Key Benefits of Grounding / Earthing

Reduces Inflammation: Physical contact with the Earth can neutralize free radicals, reducing inflammation and pain. Check out my blog, Natural Antioxidants to Fight Free Radicals.

Improves Sleep: Grounding may help regulate sleep patterns by balancing the body’s natural rhythms. Read more in my blog How Important Is Your Sleep?

Enhances Mood: Direct contact with nature has been shown to boost mood and reduce stress.

Boosts Immune System: Grounding can enhance the body’s immune response, promoting overall health.

Improves Circulation: Regular grounding may improve blood flow and decoagulation, contributing to cardiovascular health.

Ways to Practice Grounding / Earthing

Barefoot Standing / Walking / Sitting: Spend time on natural surfaces like grass, sand, or dirt. Wetting grass can enhance conductivity. Check for hazards like poison ivy or bees.

Lying on the Ground: Increase skin-to-earth contact by lying on grass or sand. Ensure the area is safe.

Submerging in Water: Dip in baths, hot tubs, or natural bodies of water. Enhance grounding by adding Epsom salts, essential oils, herbs, or crystals.

Using Grounding Equipment: Grounding mats, sheets, socks, bands, and patches are effective when going outside isn’t an option. Explore Earthing products.

Grounding Mats at Heavenly Embrace: We offer far infrared sauna sessions with grounding mats and Far-Infrared BioMat treatments for enhanced grounding.

Gardening: Direct contact with soil, leaves, trees, and flowers reconnects you to the Earth and promotes mindfulness.

Petting an Animal: Touching an animal that is in contact with the ground can ground you, offering relaxation and a sense of connection.

Get It Started!

Practicing grounding for even 10–30 minutes a day can be beneficial. Studies show that 30 minutes daily led to noticeable decreases in pain within one week. Start small and build your practice!

What You Might Feel When Grounding

Grounding can result in a variety of sensations and benefits, including:

Calmness and Relaxation

Improved Mood

Increased Energy

Pain Relief

Better Sleep

Physical Sensations like tingling or warmth

Connection to Nature

Experiences vary, but many find grounding simple and highly beneficial for overall well-being.

Discover the Earth’s Natural Heartbeat: Understanding the Schumann Resonance (SR)

The Schumann Resonance is the Earth’s natural heartbeat, consisting of low-frequency electromagnetic waves created by lightning strikes. These waves circle between the Earth’s surface and the lower ionosphere, with a main frequency around 7.83 Hz.

Scientists named this phenomenon after Winfried Otto Schumann, who predicted it mathematically in 1952. Grounding can help entrain the body to the Schumann Resonance, positively impacting mood, relaxation, cell regeneration, and healing.

Dive Deeper!

Scientific research supports grounding and earthing. Read studies like The effects of grounding (earthing) on inflammation, the immune response, wound healing, and prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases and Health Implications of Reconnecting the Human Body to the Earth’s Surface Electrons.

Emerging evidence shows that contact with the Earth—whether barefoot outside or connected indoors to grounded systems—may be a simple, natural, and profoundly effective strategy against chronic stress, inflammation, pain, poor sleep, and more. Grounding may be as essential as sunshine, clean air, water, nutritious food, and physical activity.

Reconnecting with the Earth is a simple yet profound way to enhance your physical and mental well-being. As a massage therapist, I encourage you to explore grounding and earthing as part of your holistic health routine. Next time you find yourself in one of Boulder’s parks or at the Boulder Creek, take a moment to remove your shoes and socks. Enjoy the simple pleasure of earthing therapy while you’re there. Moreover, why not make this a habit?

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, it’s easy to neglect our well-being. That’s where regular massages come in. Massages offer a range of benefits that go beyond mere relaxation and indulgence. They help reconnect you with your body, making it easier to recognize stress signals before they escalate.

Cumulatively, bodywork sessions can significantly improve your overall physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In my office, I encourage a holistic approach to well-being, and as most of you know, prevention is better than trying to solve an issue or reduce pain.

What are the physical benefits of Massage Therapy?

The list of physical benefits of massage therapy is long!!!

Muscle Relaxation: Massage helps to relieve muscle tension and stiffness, or just tired and aching muscles. It also promotes muscle relaxation and improves flexibility. Massages can release trigger points and tightness by targeting areas of tension, helping to alleviate discomfort and improve overall mobility and muscle tone. Muscle relaxation also improves posture and body awareness. Massages may do wonders for people prone to muscle cramps or muscle spasms.

Pain Relief: Massages can help alleviate chronic pain conditions such as lower back pain or neck pain. If you suffer from headaches or TMJ, massages are known for reducing tension headaches. I also have clients with very specific issues, such as Fibromyalgia, Rotator Cuff Syndrome, Sciatica, Foot Pain, Myofascial Pain, Plantar Fasciitis, Carpal Tunnel or Elbow Tendinitis, and they definitely see some relief for their pain when getting regular massages. Massages can reduce pain perception through the manipulation of soft tissues and stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.

Improved Circulation:

Massages increase blood and lymph circulation and tissue metabolism, which helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the body’s tissues while removing waste products. As part of the relaxation, massages lower blood pressure, reduce the heart rate, slow down respiration and promote more effective breathing. Thanks to the improved circulation, you also see an improved skin tone.

Enhanced Immunity: Studies have shown that regular massages can boost the immune system by increasing the activity of white blood cells, which play a key role in defending the body against infection and disease. Massages can help keep you healthy and resilient by supporting immune function.

Support Recovery: Massages improve circulation, can enhance overall health and vitality, leading to better energy levels, a strengthened immune system and faster recovery from injury or illness. Massages also reduce swelling or scarring by encouraging blood flow to damaged tissue.

What are the mental benefits of Massage Therapy?

Being forced to slow down and focus on self-care can often be a relief.

Stress Reduction: Massages help to reduce stress by promoting relaxation and lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Mental Relaxation: Regular massages can provide a much-needed break from the demands of daily life, allowing the body and mind to unwind. This, in turn, will induce mental relaxation and promote better sleep. With better sleep comes improved concentration, so it’s a win-win!

Any emotional benefits of Massage Therapy?

The emotional benefits of a massage are often hard to describe, and I can see it more in the smile that people give me after a massage.

Reduce Anxiety and Depression: Massages have been found to have positive effects on mental and emotional health, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Mood Improvement: Massages calm the nervous system, which in turn improves mood, calms bad tempers, promotes feelings of relaxation and well-being, and enhances one’s self-image and overall quality of life.

Trigger Emotional Release: With released muscle tension, sometimes emotional baggage is released in the form of Emotional Release.

That is a long list of benefits, right? I hope I’ve convinced you that it’s totally worth the investment in your health to get a massage on a regular or semi-regular basis. No matter if your focus is on your physical, mental or emotional life, all the benefits go hand-in-hand, so your body, mind and spirit will thank you when you’re getting a massage.

If this all hasn’t convinced you yet, then check out this very interesting YouTube video from “What are the health benefits of massage? – CrowdScience, BBC World Service podcast.”

How often should you get treated?

A ‘regular’ massage can look different to different people, depending on their needs. If you’re recovering from an injury, illness or surgery, you might want to be treated more often. But not too often either.. We need to let the body heal itself, it knows how to…

For maintenance, I would suggest having a massage every 4-6 weeks.

What kind of massages are recommended?

My personal go-to and favorite session to give is the Deep Tissue Massage, 90 or 120 minutes. In that time frame, I can focus on a few target areas, do a full body session or mix in a few modalities like a bit of Reflexology and/or Energy Healing, depending on what we’re working on.

Other services like Aroma Touch Session, a Swedish Massage or a Hot Stone Massage can support your overall well-being and relaxation and are great options for bodywork.

Book your appointment now and feel the benefits for yourself.

Sauna therapy has been celebrated for centuries for its myriad health benefits. We’re excited to share with you the top eight reasons why incorporating sauna sessions into your routine can be transformative. At Heavenly Embrace Wellness, we prioritize your holistic well-being.

As part of our commitment to your health journey, we are thrilled to offer Far Infrared sauna sessions alongside our massage services, enhancing the value of your experience with us.

1. Speeds Muscle Recovery After a Workout

Are you familiar with the post-workout muscle soreness that often follows intense exercise? Far infrared sauna therapy has been shown to alleviate this discomfort by reducing inflammation, thereby accelerating muscle recovery. Whether you’re an athlete or a fitness enthusiast, Far Infrared sauna sessions can be an invaluable tool in your recovery arsenal.

2. Increases Muscle Strength and Growth

Surprisingly, sauna therapy can enhance muscle strength and growth without the need for rigorous exercise. Studies have demonstrated that exposure to heat can lead to significant increases in muscle mass and protein content. In turn this is contributing to improved overall strength and performance.

3. Stimulates Natural Antioxidants

Far Infrared sauna therapy stimulates the body’s natural antioxidant production. This plays a crucial role in combating oxidative damage—a leading cause of inflammation, disease, and aging. By promoting antioxidant activity, sauna sessions support cellular health and overall well-being.

4. Improves Allergy Symptoms

Seasonal allergies can be a source of discomfort for many individuals. Fortunately, far infrared sauna therapy has been shown to alleviate symptoms such as nasal congestion, itching, and sneezing. Saunas can provide much-needed relief during allergy season.

5. Increases Cellular Resistance to Stress

Far Infrared Sauna therapy enhances cellular resilience to various stressors, including viral infections. By inducing the production of heat shock proteins, saunas bolster the immune system and promote overall resilience. This is a crucial asset in maintaining optimal health.

6. Enhances Mental Health and Cognitive Function

Beyond its physical benefits, sauna therapy offers notable advantages for mental well-being. Regular Far Infrared sauna use has been associated with improved mood, reduced anxiety, and enhanced cognitive function. This makes it a valuable tool for stress management and mental clarity.

7. Helps Reduce Chronic Pain

Chronic pain can significantly impact one’s quality of life. In contrast, Far Infrared sauna therapy offers a non-invasive approach to pain management. By reducing inflammation and promoting relaxation, saunas have been shown to alleviate various forms of chronic pain. This includes arthritis, fibromyalgia, and tension headaches.

8. Promotes Overall Relaxation and Well-Being

Last but not least, Far Infrared sauna sessions provide a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation. In fact, the combination of soothing heat and tranquil ambiance offers a therapeutic escape from the stresses of daily life, allowing you to unwind and nurture your mind, body, and spirit.

At Heavenly Embrace Wellness, we are dedicated to supporting you on your health journey. Our Far Infrared sauna sessions are designed to complement your wellness routine seamlessly. We hope you enjoyed this list of the top eight health benefits of a sauna session. Whether you’re seeking relief from muscle soreness, a boost in cognitive function, or simply a moment of relaxation, our sauna therapy offers a multitude of benefits for your holistic well-being.

Ready to experience the transformative power of sauna therapy? Book your 30 or 60-minute session with us today and embark on a journey to enhanced health and vitality.

Rosemary isn’t just that fragrant green sprig you add to roasted vegetables—it’s a plant with a rich history and an impressive list of benefits. This evergreen shrub, with its energizing, earthy aroma, has been valued for centuries. The ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Hebrews all considered rosemary sacred, using it in rituals, celebrations, and even for its believed powers to boost memory and focus.
Today, rosemary essential oil is still celebrated for many of the same reasons, plus a few new ones science has uncovered.

A Fresh, Invigorating Aroma of Rosemary Essential Oil

One of rosemary essential oil’s most loved qualities is its uplifting scent. Diffusing it can instantly freshen a room, help create a study-friendly environment, or simply energize your space. Its cleansing properties also make it a great addition to homemade cleaning products.

Aromatic Tip: Place three to four drops of rosemary essential oil in your diffuser when you want to feel focused, alert, and refreshed.

Hair & Scalp Support

Rosemary essential oil has earned its reputation as a hair care MVP. When combined with a carrier oil and massaged into the scalp, rosemary essential oil can help stimulate hair follicles, encourage healthy circulation, and promote thicker, fuller-looking hair over time.

Topical Tip: Blend one to two drops of each – rosemary, lavender and tea tree essential oils with a carrier oil (like fractionated coconut oil) and massage into your scalp, or add a drop of each to your shampoo dollop in your hand.

A Boost for the Mind and Body

Rosemary essential oil isn’t just about hair—it’s been studied for its effects on the nervous system, and the results are impressive.

Researchers have found that rosemary essential oil has:

Natural anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties

The ability to help calm anxiety and lift mood

Memory-boosting effects that support mental clarity

Its active compounds, including carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid, have shown neuroprotective benefits, which may explain why rosemary essential oil has been used traditionally for everything from easing headaches to improving focus. There’s also evidence of antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, adding even more reasons to keep it in your wellness toolkit.

If you love diving into science, you can read more in this review study.

Potential Digestive Benefits

Early research suggests that rosemary, when taken internally, may support a healthy digestive system. While more studies are needed, rosemary has long been used in cooking for both flavor and its digestive-supporting properties.

Internal Tip: Add a drop of rosemary essential oil to a veggie capsule or dilute in at least four ounces of liquid.

The Best Sleeping Positions

There’s no doubt that sleep is a significant and important part of the human experience. Cultures around the world have understood how vital it is since the earliest days of human history. According to traditional Chinese medicine, sleep is essential for maintaining the balance of yin and yang within the body. Organs like the gall bladder, liver, and lungs are said to replenish the body when at rest during the night. Without good sleeping habits, it’s said that the body’s natural energies are drained and the quality of life is therefore decreased. Let’s review the importance of sleeping positions and the best sleeping positions for your health.

Sleep Better & More Comfortably

To keep your mind and body functioning its best, you need to be adequately rested. If you are waking up with pain in your body or finding your arms are falling asleep frequently, you may be experiencing spinal discomfort at night. Maybe it’s time to re-evaluate your sleeping habits, sleep hygiene, and the position you sleep in.

The position you sleep in can have an impact on the overall quality of your sleep, and can even affect your very bodily structure. To put it simply, there are some positions that work well and some you probably want to avoid.

Courtesy of: cpapclinic.ca

Stomach Sleeping

Sleeping on one’s stomach is a common habit that can provide much comforting to the psyche, but it’s widely regarded as one of the worst sleeping positions, especially if you suffer from past injury or arthritis in the neck region. While it can reduce snoring, it can also reduce the spine’s natural curve, leading to lower back pain over time. It also has the potential to cause pain throughout the back and neck, which can also lead to feelings of tingling or numbness in the arms or fingers, and generally reduces the quality of one’s sleep.

Side Sleeping

Slightly better than the stomach, sleeping on one’s side can also reduce sleep apnea and snoring with less risk of adverse effects. The side you sleep on plays a significant role here. Sleeping on the right side can worsen heartburn. Sleeping on the left, however, can put a strain on organs like the liver, stomach, and lungs. For best results, you should have a pillow thick enough to tilt your head above your shoulders. Furthermore, if possible, position a pillow between your legs.

Back Sleeping

By far the best way to sleep is on your back. This makes it easier for the head, neck, and spine to align naturally and comfortably. Without the added pressure to your muscles and bones, you’re in the best position to sleep well and avoid muscle pain.

Sleeping habits can be long-lasting and difficult to break, but with persistence can be changed. Time and effort spent sleeping in a better position can have a tremendous impact on your health and well being.

What is Sleep Hygiene?

Obtaining healthy sleep is important for both physical and mental health, improving productivity and overall quality of life. Good sleep hygiene is all about putting yourself in the best position to sleep well each and every night.

Strong sleep hygiene means having both a bedroom environment and daily routines that promote consistent, uninterrupted sleep. Keeping a stable sleep schedule, making your bedroom comfortable and free of disruptions, following a relaxing pre-bed routine, and building healthy habits during the day can all contribute to ideal sleep hygiene.

You might not be able to control the factors that interfere with your sleep. However, you can adopt habits that encourage better sleep. Here are a few tips that may help make your sleep more calm and free of disruptions:

Create a Sleep Schedule: The recommended amount of sleep for a healthy adult is at least seven hours. Most people don’t need more than eight hours in bed to be well rested.

Pay Attention to Food and Drink: Don’t go to bed hungry or stuffed. Avoid heavy meals within a couple of hours of bedtime. Nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol can interfere with sleep.

Have a Comfortable Mattress and Pillow: Choose the best mattress and pillow for your needs wisely. Shop around and try different options.

Use Excellent Bedding: The sheets and blankets are the first thing you touch when you get into bed, so it’s beneficial to make sure they match your needs and preferences.

Set a Cool Yet Comfortable Temperature: Aim for a cooler bedroom (around 65°F) to support better sleep.

Regular Physical Activity: Exercise can promote better sleep, but avoid activity too close to bedtime. Spending time outdoors daily may help too.

Block Out Light: Use heavy curtains or an eye mask, avoid screens before bed, and dim the lights as bedtime approaches.

Drown Out Noise: Try earplugs, a white noise machine, or a fan to reduce disruptive sounds.

Manage Stress and Worries: Write down your concerns before bed, practice stress management, and consider meditation.

Try Calming Scents: Diffuse calming oils such as Lavender, Frankincense, or Vetiver to support relaxation. Activities like an epsom salt bath can also prepare your body for sleep.

Relieving Pain with Bodywork & Massage

Muscle pain while we sleep is never a pleasant experience. Whether it’s from the way we sleep or otherwise, it has the potential to significantly reduce our comfort, mood, and overall quality of life. While sleep, meditation & mindfulness, and other self-care practices like yoga can help with pain management, Massage therapy is another effective treatment option.

Massage brings oxygen to your muscles, improves circulation, which alleviates cramps & pain, and reduces stress and anxiety by relaxing the body. It allows you to feel better and hopefully relaxed enough to get a good night’s sleep.

At Heavenly Embrace Wellness, we offer a range of massage and bodywork services to help you feel your very best. Contact us today to book an appointment and start improving your quality of life.

The Perfect Mother’s Day Gift

We love to celebrate moms here at Heavenly Embrace Wellness. No matter if the mother figure in our lives is a mom, a friend, a teacher, a sister, a daughter, an aunt, a grandmother—or that lovely person staring at you from the mirror! Giving her a massage this Mother’s Day is the perfect way to help her de-stress and reconnect.

While the rewards of motherhood can’t be denied, I think we can all agree moms have one of the toughest jobs in our society. Unlike pregnant mothers, who often feel like their motherhood draws too much attention to themselves, society tells mothers of young children that their role is all about their children first, second, and last. Getting up in the middle of the night to change a leaking diaper? Chasing a toddler into the street? Taking time off work to care for a kindergartner with an ear infection? No matter, it’s not about you, mom. It’s about your kids.

Sacrifices everywhere…

It’s true, to a point. Who wouldn’t make sacrifices for their children? That is to say, one factor that can contribute to a healthy, happy childhood is a healthy, happy mother. Every person deserves to take steps towards their own well-being—mothers, too!

Moms that stay at home to raise their children often deal with financial stress or a struggle to find personal growth. Working moms are usually pursuing a career at a time when their children need them the most. Dealing with society’s expectations that they should be the perfect caregiver while working part-time or full-time can create an impossible scenario that leaves moms feeling stressed and drained. That’s why we need to let them know how much we appreciate them.

Have you noticed we are celebrating Mother’s Day just a few weeks after we celebrate Mother Earth? These two are inseparable!

Mother Earth, our first mother

Above all, Mother Earth is, after all, our first mother; she is the one who gave us our human moms! Mother Earth constantly cares for us, giving us resources like water, air, food, and protection. Just like our mothers, wives, and grandmothers take care of us by baking us cookies, listening to our problems, and giving us love and support! So after you have done your Earth Day celebration of recycling and reusing (which is an absolute must!!), start thinking about how you can celebrate the mom figure in your life and Mother Earth at the same time. One of the best ways to do this is to give your mom a gift that helps her relax and have fun in a completely natural and healthy way.

Massage treatments combine some of Mother Nature’s own tactics with special health-conscious techniques, which help the human mind and body reach its happiest, healthiest state. This makes massage therapy the perfect gift to give for Mother’s Day.

Here are a few Heavenly Embrace Massages for mom this Mother’s Day:

1. Heavenly Embrace Signature Treatments

Our signature treatments are our most popular offerings. Choose from 3 unique treatments you won’t find at other places. We are well-versed in massage, reflexology & energy healing to treat the whole person—mind, body & spirit. Find the combination that will allow your mother or yourself to reconnect and bring balance back.

2. Essential Oils

If your mother is not a huge fan of massage or bodywork treatments, consider gifting her with some medicinal essential oils. I also offer a free health consultation that introduces essential oils and their many benefits.

3. Distance Healing

If your mother lives far away or is unable to come to the clinic but needs some healing assistance, she might enjoy a calming distance healing energy treatment. This treatment activates our energy centers and assists in balance, stress reduction, grounding, and centering. The effects of the session last long after it concludes.

4. A Massage Gift Card
